Backlink exchange — definition
A backlink exchange is a reciprocal agreement where two sites publish contextual links to each other. Done well, each link sits in relevant editorial content. Done poorly — dump lists, identical anchors, pure link farms — search engines treat it as a manipulative scheme and may discount or penalize the links.
Why it matters for indie developers
Indie SaaS rarely lands TechCrunch coverage, so peer backlinks are often the realistic path to referral traffic and crawl signals. The safety rule is editorial context: write something useful, then link naturally.
